The Muhyideen College of Education, Ilorin was established by edict 21 of 2005 issued by the Muhyideen Association of Nigeria. Its purpose is to organize and develop courses for the training of various . categories of teachers, to promote research, and advance knowledge and learning as well as offer community services.
The College has a Governing Council, made up of eleven members. The council is responsible for general supervision and control of the College.
There is a Provost for the College. He is the administrative and academic head of the College. He is responsible for the execution of policy decisions of the council. The Provost is assisted by a Deputy Provost, appointed by the Governing Council.
The College Registrar, Bursar, Librarian and Director of works are the other Principal Officers of the college. Appointed by the College Council, they assist the Provost in the running of the affairs of the College.
The College has an Academic Board, with the Provost as the chairman. He is supported by the Deputy Provost, Deans of Schools, Directors of Units/Centres, Heads of Departments and all Chief Lecturers (who are not Deans or directors or Heads of departments). The Academic Board assists the Provost and the Council on the direction and management of academic matters, the student's regulations, and awards of certifications.
The College was granted provisional approval by the National . Commission "for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Abuja in 2007, to produce classroom teachers for the primary and junior secondary schools in all subjects approved by the NCCE.
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COLLEGE
The College was established to prepare and produce the much needed middle level manpower in the teaching cadre. The graduates of the college will provide qualitative and quantitative education, good morals to pupils in the primary schools and students in the junior secondary Schools. To motivate both the staff and the students of the College, the motto adopted by the College is Knowledge is everybody's right.
The academic, social and cultural programmes of the college are designed to achieve this philosophy.
Muhyideen College of Education, 1I0rin is a private institution located in Kulende area, in the eastern outskirts of 1I0rin metropolis. The College occupies a site which extends from a distance from Kulende Housing Estate to the north - south railway.
Infrastructure consists of lecture rooms, auditorium, laboratories and library; in addition to blocks of offices, sports arena, Demonstration School, internet faculty and educational Technology centre, College clinic. etc.
The staff population at the beginning of January 2009 comprises 51 academic and non-academic staff members. This will increase to 99 academic staff members and 24 non academic staffers by the end of the year.
STUDENTS POPULATION AND SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
The College started with 72 students in 2007. By January 2009 the population of the students is about 866. For the 2009/2010 session there will be an additional 1000 students.
The college enrolled students in f 5 subject combinations in 2007. The number of subject combinations will be 35 at the beginning of the 2009/2010 academic session.
The college encourages co-curricular activities by students. These activities include student's unionism, games, sporting activities, debates, cultural activities and the like. The Students Union is supervised by the Deputy Provost.
